Gauge is not a complete tolerance
A gauge number can communicate a conventional nominal thickness, but it does not by itself define the permitted variation or the measurement method.
Freeze the number
Record the agreed millimetre wall on the approved drawing, quotation and purchase order. This gives production and incoming inspection one common value.
Control formed sections
For square and rectangular products, also identify outside dimensions, corner geometry, straightness, twist and finish where the assembly depends on them.
